How the name Black Friday came out

The predominant interpretation and the rest

Black Friday, the American custom, the day after Thanksgiving, which marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season, has made its appearance in Greece in recent years.

Specifically, the custom from America since 2016 made its appearance in Greece, at the initiative of large retail chains.

The interpretations that have been proposed for the origin of the name are many.

Typical is the one suggested by the American newspaper "Philadelphia Inquirer" in the issue of November 28, 1981.

In the 50s, when bookstore entries were handwritten, accountants used red ink for passive and black profits, which for the shops of that time began on that day and continued until Christmas.

According to another version that does not seem to prevail, the term "Black Friday" was first used by traffic wardens in Philadelphia, USA, to describe the great traffic on the streets that day and the workload for themselves due to discounts and the start of the Christmas season.

The first opinion on the origin of the name Black Friday appeared in the magazine "Factory Management and Maintenance" in November 1951. It referred to the practice of employees doing their job on Friday after Thanksgiving, claiming illness, in order to to enjoy the four-day holiday.
