Technical difficulties in controlling air traffic in Germany are expected to cause problems today across European airspace, said the company that manages Frankfurt Airport, the airline with the highest traffic in Germany.

"So there will be business delays and flight cancellations at Frankfurt Airport," Fraport said in a post on its website. The company spoke of "technical difficulties" at an air traffic control center in Langen, near Frankfurt, without elaborating.

The air traffic control company DFS, whose inspectors monitor take-offs and landings at Germany's 15 international airports, was not immediately available for comment. Lufthansa, the largest airline at Frankfurt Airport, said it was too early to say how many of its flights would be affected.

The Frankfurt airport website has announced a number of flight cancellations, although it does not give a reason for them.
