Dozens of mortar shells were fired from Gaza into Israel early Tuesday morning, one of the most serious incidents preventing the end of the crisis in the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli military said 28 missiles exploded in Gaza at around 7am local time. No one was injured, but one of them fell in the yard of a kindergarten.

"This is the largest dam since 2014," said Jonathan Conricus, a military spokesman.

"Mortar fire fell in the yard of a kindergarten, but fortunately no children were injured. "That was definitely the goal when the kids went to school and people were going to work."

The Israeli military says most of the missiles were intercepted by Israel's missile defense system.

Suspicions of the attack are directed at the Islamic group Jihad.
