A Swedish court today sentenced Rahmat Akilov - an Uzbek whose asylum application was rejected - to life in prison for killing five people and injuring ten in April 2017 in the Swedish capital.
Akilov had fallen with the stolen truck driving on a crowd of pedestrians on a busy Stockholm road.
"The accused was found guilty, among other things, of terrorist acts and the murder of five people. "He was sentenced to life in prison," the Stockholm District Court said in a statement.
On April 7 last year, Akilov stole a truck parked outside a restaurant in central Stockholm and drove it 500 meters down a sidewalk, dragging pedestrians before ending up in a department store window.
He was arrested the same day outside a gas station in a Stockholm suburb as he was identified by a CCTV camera and confessed to being the driver of the truck. During his trial, he said he wanted to punish Sweden for its involvement in the fight against the Islamic State jihadist group.
