6,3 magnitude earthquake shakes southern China

A magnitude 6,3 earthquake shook southern China near the border with India, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers (58 miles), about 58 kilometers from Nyingchi County, with a population of about 200 thousand people.

The quake, initially reported as measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale, struck Tibet, one of the most seismically active areas on Earth. The boundary between the Indian and Asian tectonic plates lies below the Himalayan-Tibetan region, with their collisions causing strong earthquakes.
