At least 75 people have died and tens of thousands of homes have been damaged or completely destroyed in Sudan due to torrential rains and floods that have swept the country since the start of the rainy season in May, police said on Tuesday.
Heavy rainfall is usually recorded in Sudan between May and October. The African country is hit during this period, almost every year, by widespread floods that destroy houses, infrastructure and crops.
The death toll so far this year has reached "75 dead and another 30 injured", the National Civil Protection Council clarified in a press release published yesterday.
"12.551 houses have been completely destroyed and (another) 20.751 have been damaged," according to the same source.
Nile, South Darfur, North Kordofan, South Kordofan and Kassala states are among the hardest hit, according to the UN.
In a report released on Sunday, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimated that those affected across Sudan since the start of the rainy season are already 136.000. This number, as well as that of the affected communities, has "doubled" compared to the corresponding period last year, he pointed out.
In all of 2021, those affected by the rainy season in Sudan were 314.500, according to OCHA.
