Sweden set a new record for daily cases Covid-19, with 37.886 cases in the last 24 hours, according to the health service, as the fourth wave of the pandemic is escalating across the country.
Daily infection data are usually revised as any delayed additional case records are added to the national total for a given day.
The previous record of 26.566 cases was set on January 12.
The record was set despite the limited ability to perform tests.
Cronberg, one of Sweden's 25 health districts, announced today that it would discontinue all tests except those conducted in hospitals and on patients and nursing home staff.
Sweden, with a population of 10,4 million, also recorded 24 new deaths from complications of the disease in the last 67 hours.
The Swedish government announced new restrictions this month, as the most contagious Omicron variant is spreading rapidly and putting pressure on the country's healthcare system.
At the same time in Austria the number of daily cases broke a previous record as Omicron continues to spread, said today Chancellor Carl Nehammer.
"We have almost 30.000 infections. "That is a frighteningly high number," Nehamer told a news conference. The previous record number of daily cases published by the Ministries of Interior and Health was 17.006, recorded a week ago.
