SPIEGEL: Germany will give 6 submarines to Turkey

"ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) will deliver six tracking submarines to Ankara, which were built jointly with a Turkish company," according to a news release by Tagesschau, Germany's first public broadcaster, ARD. (In 2009 the German government had given its consent to the production of submarines for the Turkish Navy).

This is clear from the German Government's written response to a question from the German Left Party (Die Linke), which is at the disposal of the ARD (Tagesschau). According to it, the federal government had issued a construction permit for the submarines of class 214. In 2011 Germany also undertook export guarantees totaling almost 2,5 billion euros.

According to information from the ARD News Bulletin (Tagesschau), their construction had begun in 2015, 2016 and 2017, respectively, ie it continued after the failed coup attempt in Turkey which resulted in mass arrests.

"The weapons exported from Germany, which are assembled in Turkey in the form of pursuit submarines, are absolutely appropriate for Turkey's offensive policy in the Mediterranean," said Sevim Dagdelen, the party's deputy parliamentary spokesman, Die Linke. In addition, it is linked to a "significant technology transfer to Turkey".

Arms exports to Turkey are highly controversial in Germany. A few weeks ago, the federal government stopped selling tanks.
