The death toll from Israeli shelling on Wednesday in three zones in the ancient city of Palmyra in the central Syrian desert rose to 49, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Earlier, the Syrian state news agency SANA reported that 36 people were killed and more than 50 were injured.
According to the non-governmental organization, which is based in Britain and relies on a wide network of sources in Syria, 24 Syrian civilians belonging to paramilitary groups supported by Iran were killed, 22 non-Syrians, mainly members of the Shiite "Al Nujaba Movement" of Iraq, and 3 unidentified people.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, among the targets hit in an industrial zone of Palmyra was an ammunition depot.
The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned "in the strongest possible way the barbaric Israeli attack against the city of Palmyra", which is part of "the ongoing crimes of Zionism against the countries of the region and their people".
