People are missing after two cargo ships collided near the German island of Helgoland in the North Sea, the central administration for dealing with emergency situations at sea announced today.
The ships Polesie and Verity collided around 06:00 a.m. Greek time at a distance of about 12 nautical miles southwest of Helgoland, as a result of which the Verity may have sunk, according to the announcement of the central administration.
One person was rescued from the sea and is receiving first aid, while others are still missing, according to the statement.
A rescue boat, police boats, an aircraft with special sensors and a helicopter are involved in the rescue operation.
The Polesie, with 22 people on board, has not sunk, according to authorities. The Verity was sailing from Bremen to the English town of Immingham. The Polesie was sailing from Hamburg to La Coruna in Spain.
