Thousands of Syrians who fled their country were excited by the news of the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime, with many awaiting their return to their homeland.
Thousands of Syrians turned up at the Çolvegozu border gate in southern Turkey to return to their homes.
The Syrians are at the border gate, awaiting customs procedures. According to Anadolu, to avoid overcrowding, gendarmerie teams set up a separate checkpoint about 5 kilometers from the border.
As early as yesterday, migrants, wearing coats and blankets, camped next to the gate waiting to cross into Syria. Some warmed themselves by makeshift fires, while others remained in the cold.
After the controls at the specific point, the Syrians deemed suitable for crossing were directed to the border gate. Many have had to seek refuge in Turkey since 2011 and now want to make their way back.
The news of the fall of the Assad regime excited many Syrians in Turkey. In Istanbul, where the Syrian community numbers 500.000, there were celebrations outside the Fatih Mosque.
Earlier, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan told the 15th Ambassadors' Conference that Ankara wants the return of Syrians. "We will continue efforts to ensure the safe and voluntary return of Syrians and the reconstruction of the country," he stressed.
