Spanish airport operator Aena announced today that 50 flights due to depart from Barcelona's El Prat airport have been canceled or will face long delays following a storm that hit the area.
The managing company diverted to alternative airports 17 flights that were to land at El Prat airport this morning, as it reported in its X account.
Thunderstorms and hail lashed the Barcelona region in eastern Spain today, less than a week after the worst flash floods hit the Valencia region some 300km to the south.
The death toll from Spain's worst flash floods reached 217 yesterday, Sunday, almost all of them in the Valencia region and more than 60 in the suburb of Paiporta.
The rain stopped late this morning and the airport is reopening, a spokesman told Reuters.
Transport Minister Oscar Puente wrote on his X account that the operation of Catalonia's suburban trains has been suspended.
