Its name literally means "the place where water does not thaw"
TOymyakon is a village in the north of the Saharan Republic in Siberia and is considered the coldest place on the planet. Its name comes from the Oimiakon River, whose name literally means "the place where water does not thaw".
Oimiakon has extremely cold winters with temperatures reaching around regularly at -40 ° C to -45 ° C while on the coldest nights the temperature has at times approached or even reached them -60 ° C. In fact, the snow can reach 2 meters in height.
The most extreme temperature ever recorded is −67,7 ° C and with this number Oimiakon has won the title of the coldest settlement on Earth (in a permanently inhabited area). Historically, even lower numbers have been recorded only in Antarctica, and the world record negative temperature that ever struck the Earth was recorded at Russia's Vostok station in Antarctica at −89,2 ° C on July 21, 1983.
It has a population of 472 inhabitants and the duration of the day ranges from 3 hours in December to 21 hours in June.
