Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman said the country's nuclear facilities suffered "serious damage" from US airstrikes, the Associated Press reported, without giving further details.
This is the first time Tehran has acknowledged the damage caused by the US strikes on its nuclear facilities that took place in the early hours of Sunday.
The comments came hours after US President Donald Trump disputed a US intelligence report that said the attacks did not affect the key underground sites of Iran's nuclear program.
The preliminary report of the Pentagon's intelligence agency's damage was published by CNN, and the initial conclusions were in complete contradiction to Donald Trump's constant declarations that the attacks "totally destroyed" the uranium enrichment facilities.
Two of the people familiar with the damage assessment said Iran's stockpile of enriched uranium was not destroyed. One of them said the centrifuges remained "almost intact."
The publication of the findings, the authenticity of which was confirmed by the White House, provoked a strong reaction from the government and President Trump.
Asked about the leaked intelligence report on US strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities, Trump told a reporter before the NATO Summit that "they really don't know what they're talking about" and that the US strikes caused "essential obliteration" of the facilities.
At the same time, he continued his attacks on CNN and the New York Times, using the term “scum.” “The Iranian nuclear program went back decades,” he insisted.
