The message of the Europeans to Benjamin Netanyahu
The Council of Foreign Ministers unanimously conveyed to the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, the position of 28 that the only viable solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is the creation of two separate states, on the borders of 1967, with Jerusalem as its common capital. until its final status is determined through direct talks.
This was announced by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, after the morning meeting of the Foreign Ministers in Brussels and the breakfast with the Prime Minister of Israel. The High Representative revealed that despite the fact that three issues of discussion had been identified with V. Netanyahu, in the end the discussion revolved mostly on the issue of Jerusalem, for about two hours.
The EU does not want to allow the peace gap to be widened, but it does not intend to launch its own exclusive peace initiative. Instead he wants to activate the quartet. Similarly, as F. Mogherini explained, "there is no attempt to restart the talks without the US, but the US should not think that their own initiative can yield results."
"We will not sit 'waiting for Goto', we will not have such an approach", stressed Mogherini, but noted that it is not the role of the EU to create overlapping procedures.
F. Mogherini also referred to the role of the King of Jordan as Commissioner of the Holy Land. The EU of 28 insists on the need to respect the status of the Holy Land as a holy city of three religions.
