NATO does not want "a new Cold War", said today the Secretary General of the organization Jens Stoltenberg and called on Russia to cooperate in the Scripal case. "We have what I would call a 'dual approach' to Russia," he told the BBC. "On the one hand there is deterrence, defense and on the other dialogue, because we do not want a new Cold War, we do not want a new arms race," he added.

"Russia is our neighbor, so we must continue to try to improve our relations with Russia," Stoltenberg said, noting that "isolating Russia" should not be an "alternative" option.

"At some point Russia will understand that it is in its interest to cooperate with us and not to enter into a confrontation, and we are ready to do so if certain basic rules and standards of international relations are respected," he added.

The poisoning on British soil of former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Julia has escalated into a confrontation between East and West in recent hours, with Western allies unanimously denouncing Russia.
