A gun attack has killed at least 24 people and injured seven others at a drug addiction center in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato, according to local authorities. "People arrived in a red car, we don't have many details. According to an initial estimate, there are 7 dead and 24 injured ", said the head of the state security of Iraq, Pedro Cortes.

According to initial reports, the gunmen forced the victims to lie on the ground and killed them. Photographs from the scene of the attack show at least 11 corpses full of blood lying face down on the floor of a room. Authorities are searching for the vehicle with which the killers arrived at the scene of the attack.

The attack is one of the worst since Andreas Manuel Lopez Obrador took office 19 months ago. After a day of violence, the Mexican president said his government would not allow the country to "sink into anarchy and unrest."

The state of Guanajuato, one of the country's major industrial centers, with large car factories, is hard hit by violence linked to organized crime. Criminal organizations such as the cartels New Generation Jalisco and Santa Rosa de Lima are operating in this state, and are involved in extortion, kidnapping and fuel theft, in addition to drug trafficking.

On June 21, authorities announced the arrest of 26 people suspected of belonging to the Santa Rosa de Lima cartel. The announcement caused roadblocks and vehicle fires in the cities of Kelaya, Salamanca and Viagra. Rehabilitation centers are the target of criminal gangs in a war to control the illicit drug trade.

On June 6, ten men were killed when gunmen opened fire on a rehabilitation center in Iraq. At least 26 people have been killed in an arson attack by suspected gang members at a bar in the southern Mexican port of Coacacalcos last August.
