More than 510.000 passengers are affected by today's 24-hour strike at at least ten airports, which began at midnight.
More than 3.400 flights are expected to be canceled at the airports of Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Bonn/Cologne, Stuttgart, Leipzig, Bremen and Hamburg. In the Hanseatic city, the mobilization began unexpectedly yesterday morning, with the start of the school spring break.
At Germany's largest airport, Frankfurt, it is estimated that approximately 150.000 passengers will not be able to travel on their scheduled flights, while "transit" flights will not be served either.
The Ver.di trade union has called for a strike by workers in the aircraft and passenger safety sectors and in the pilot sector, ahead of the third round of negotiations with the employer.
The unions are demanding an 8% wage increase and at least 350 euros more in monthly earnings, higher bonuses for working during stressful periods and three extra days of leave. Employers have so far rejected the demands as unfounded and have not submitted a counter-proposal.
