A suicide bomber has struck shortly after noon in front of a gathering of Muslim clerics as they were leaving an open-air gathering site west of the Afghan capital, Kabul, killing at least eight people, security officials said.
Clergy had gathered to denounce terrorism and call for peace, according to the same source, who added that the death toll was expected to rise.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Islamic State has carried out several attacks in Kabul, but security officials say several of them are most likely the work of the Haqqani Network, an organization with links to the Taliban.
A series of bombings in Kabul have claimed the lives of dozens of people in recent months, and there is no evidence of escalation of violence during Ramadan, the Muslim holy month.
