At least four people were killed and 10 others were injured when a footbridge collapsed near the International University of Florida in Miami.

The 862-ton (53m) bridge crashed into an eight-lane motorway on Thursday afternoon, destroying at least eight vehicles.

This bridge was erected on Saturday in just six hours. It was built using a method called "accelerated bridge construction" to avoid traffic jams. A significant part of the bridge was assembled on the side of the road and then installed.

At least 10 people were injured and taken to Kendall Regional Medical Center, including two people who were in "critical condition", according to Dr. Mark McKenney, Director of General Surgery.

Police also asked TV crews to move away from the scene so that rescuers could hear potential victims shouting for help.

The American President was watching "the catastrophic collapse of the bridge".

"Just last week we were celebrating the land that was completed and now we are dealing with a tragedy here," said Sweetwater Mayor Orlando Lopez.
