Pistachio-free baklava, cheese-free toast, cheese-free pie are now being sold in kiosks in Turkey due to poverty, according to Turkish opposition newspapers, which even cite tweets from officials in the main opposition party.
According to the Turkish newspaper Cumhuriyet, peanut-baklava is sold at a price of 19,90 Turkish lira instead of the normal price of 150 Turkish lira. Also, the well-known "toast" Mehmet Erol in Gaziantep, Ankara and Istanbul started selling empty toast for two pounds. The adviser to the official opposition leader, Deniz Demir, uploaded a photo from a menu on Twitter with the well-known traditional Turkish pie 'giozleme', which is sometimes made with cheese, potato or minced meat, commenting: "After plain baklava and plain toast, now plain toast … ”. The menu states that the pie is empty and sold for 10 pounds.
