At least 16 people died, including four children, when an inflatable boat carrying migrants sank off the northwestern Turkish province of Canakkale (Dardanelli), Turkey's state-run Anadolu news agency reported today.
The governor of the province, Ilhami Aktas, told Anadolu that four migrants were rescued early this morning and taken to the hospital, while search and rescue operations continue, involving ten coast guard vessels, 2 helicopters, the navy, the Turkish Disaster Management Agency ( AFAD) and the National Medical Rescue Team (UMKE).
It is not yet clear how many people were on the inflatable, the captain told Anadolu.
Public broadcaster TRT reported that 20 bodies had been recovered.
