Donald Trump has launched an attack on Iran, via a post on Truth Social, while also casting doubt on the progress of the – in any case – fragile ceasefire. The US president criticizes Tehran for its delay in negotiations, noting that “now they will have to pay the price.”
"Iran's military is a complete mess. Much of it, like the Navy and Air Force, doesn't even exist anymore - they've been completely defeated. Iran is all talk and no action. The 'bully' of the Middle East is DEAD!!!" Donald Trump initially said.
"They took too long to negotiate a deal that would have been great for them, now they will have to pay the price!!!" he added, in an indirect reference to the latest US strikes on Iranian targets.
With his last sentence, the American president raises doubts about whether the ceasefire, which he himself declared in early April, still exists or whether, in his own way, he is putting pressure on Tehran to agree to the draft that is already on the table.
Earlier today, however, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ali Baghai stressed that there can be no ceasefire as long as the US strikes Iranian targets. "Every diplomatic process requires a minimally stable environment," Baghai noted.
The US president's comments today came just a day after he said a deal could be reached in "two or three days" and that the strategically important Strait of Hormuz would reopen "immediately" after the negotiations were completed.
