"We are awaiting Iran's response, if necessary we will defend Iran," said US President Donald Trump in his first statements on Fox News after the Israeli attack on Tehran.
The US president also said that he had been informed of Israel's plans before the attack, but clarified that the US military had no involvement in the operation.
He also reiterated that he hopes Iran will continue negotiations with the US to limit its nuclear program.
"Iran cannot have a nuclear bomb and we hope to return to the negotiating table. We'll see," was Trump's characteristic aversion.
At the same time, he confirmed that "there are several (Iranian) senior leaders who will not return."
The US president finally said that his government contacted a key ally in the Middle East before the attack to inform it, without specifying which country it was.
