US President Donald Trump told Fox News that he may be willing to talk to Iran, the American network reported today.
"I hear they really want to talk. It's possible, it depends on the terms, possible, just possible... You know, in a way we don't even need to talk anymore, if you really think about it, but it's possible."
Trump also said he was surprised that Iran targeted Persian Gulf countries in response to US and Israeli attacks.
"One of the things that surprised me the most was when they attacked countries that weren't attacking them," he said.
He also said he was "not happy" with the choice of Iran's new supreme leader and that the initial results of the military operation "Epic Fury" have "far exceeded expectations."
"I don't believe he can live in peace," Trump said in an interview with Fox News' international affairs editor Trey Yingst.
This is yet another conversation between the US president and an American media outlet, in a barrage of interviews that began yesterday after the surge in oil prices and the concern it caused in the markets.
The BBC is taking stock of the latest statements by the American president, from which, as has been commented on in the international press since this morning, no clear exit strategy emerges from the war, although they have brought about a stabilization in oil prices, although it is still unknown whether it will last or not.
He told CBS News: "I think the war is almost over," adding that the US is "way ahead of schedule."
Speaking to NBC, he left open the possibility of acquiring Iranian oil, saying that "certainly some people have talked about it."
In an interview with the New York Post, he said the administration is "a long way" from making a decision on whether to send US troops to Iran.
Speaking to Republican lawmakers, Trump said the US was involved in a "short-term" military operation in Iran to "neutralize some very bad people."
He added: "We have already won in many ways, but we have not won enough."
In the interview with the New York Post, he also said he was "not happy" with Iran's new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, but later in the press briefing he did not clarify who he wants to replace him or how that could be done.
In the same press briefing, he reiterated that the operation in Iran was a "huge success," but added that he wants to ensure that Iran will not be able to develop nuclear weapons "for a very long time," a much bigger challenge.
The US still has targets in Iran, he told reporters, but they could be neutralized "in one day."
Nevertheless, he declared that the war would end "very soon."
Later, in a post on Truth Social, Trump warned that "Death, Fire and Fury will prevail" in Iran if the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz is cut off.
