US President Donald Trump reiterated yesterday, Sunday, that the United States will occupy Greenland "one way or another" because "if we don't, Russia or China will."
"Making a deal is the easy part, but one way or another we're going to have Greenland," the US president said from Air Force One.
The US president clarified that Washington is not talking about a short-term "lease" of Greenland, but only about acquiring this Danish territory. "We need a title deed," he said.
"Greenland should make the deal, because Greenland doesn't want to see Russia or China take control," Donald Trump argued, mocking the defense of the autonomous Danish territory.
"Basically, their defense is based on two dog sleds. You know that? You know what their defense is? Two dog sleds," he said. "Meanwhile, we see Russian destroyers and submarines, and Chinese destroyers and submarines everywhere," Donald Trump added.
"We are not going to let this happen, and if it affects NATO, so be it. But, you know, they need us more than we need them, I tell you that with certainty," he commented.
Denmark, which owns Greenland, is a NATO member like the United States, and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said last week that a US attack on any member of the Alliance would mean "the end of everything," including NATO and the security system created at the end of World War II.
