Police in Australia announced today that they have charged the 24-year-old man in the attack on Sydney's Bondi Beach with 59 offences.
Naveed Akram, 24, is charged with 59 offences, including terrorism, New South Wales Police said. Premier Anthony Albanese had said the 24-year-old was expected to be charged today after waking from a coma.
The other alleged perpetrator, his 50-year-old father, Shahid, died at the scene of the mass attack on Sunday after being neutralized by law enforcement forces.
In a statement, New South Wales Police said: "Following extensive investigations as part of the operation, today (Wednesday 17 December), investigators attended a hospital where I have charged a 24-year-old man with 59 offences."
Police said the alleged offenses include:
Committing a terrorist act
15 counts of murder
40 charges of causing injury/serious bodily harm to a person with intent to murder
Use of a firearm, etc. with intent to cause serious bodily harm
Public display of "banned symbol of terrorist organization"
Placing explosives in/near a building with the intent to cause damage
Police will allege in court that the man acted in a manner that caused death, serious injury and endangered life, with the intention of promoting a religious idea and instilling fear in the community. Initial indications suggest this was a terrorist attack inspired by ISIS, which is listed as a terrorist organization in Australia, police added, SkyNews reported. The suspect remains in hospital under police guard and will appear in court today via video link.
