A man was killed Tuesday night when a crane on a construction site collapsed due to a storm and strong winds in the coastal city of Newport in northwestern Belgium, city officials said.
"The crane fell on two houses opposite each other," the city, which is about 20 kilometers from the border with France, said in a statement posted on its website.
"One person was killed and one was seriously injured," the statement said, adding that two other people were slightly injured.
According to the Belgian news agency Belga, the victim was found under the rubble.
Photos published in the Belgian press show a hole in the roof of one of the two apartment buildings damaged by the crane fall. It is a nine-storey building, the last three floors of which have been severely damaged.
Fears of the crane falling were also felt in mid-November, according to Belga, and about 50 people had been evacuated from their homes by then.
