Berlin: The driver who fell on the crowd is a person with psychological problems

The mayor of Berlin, Francesca Gifai, spoke of an "act of rage by a person with serious psychological problems", referring to the incident that took place yesterday, Wednesday, in the center of West Berlin, when a car fell on a pedestrian, killing a woman and injuring 29 people. , including children.

"It's a dark day for Berlin," Giffay said, adding that police were now certain that the driver, 29-year-old Gore H., a Berliner of Armenian descent, was having serious psychological problems. The authorities are trying, he added, with the help of an interpreter, to "draw conclusions from his confused statements" and also to understand whether his act is related to the posters found in the luggage area concerning Turkey.

However, the investigations are carried out by the homicide service of the police and not by the state security, which would be responsible if it was a politically motivated act, the first channel of the German public television ARD points out in its report. The man was known to police for various offenses, but not for extremism or terrorism. Yesterday, the house of the 29-year-old, in which he lived with his mother and sister, was also searched. The second had even stated to BILD that her brother has a "serious problem".

Yesterday, a crowd of people left flowers and candles at the spot where the 51-year-old teacher from Hesse, who was in Berlin accompanying students on a school trip, died tragically. Some of these students are among the injured. Today the flags of the public buildings of the German capital are waving at half-mast.

In their place of origin, Bad Arolsen, the local community is in a state of shock. Parents and a group from the school have already gone to Berlin to take care of the children.

"A school class trip became a nightmare. "Our thoughts are with the relatives of the victim and the injured, including children," Chancellor Olaf Solz wrote on Twitter.
