Bulgarian President Rumen Radev, Prime Minister Kirill Petkov and several high-ranking officials went into isolation today after attending a meeting with the Speaker of Parliament, who was positive in Covid-19.

Petkov is "teleworking", as announced by the government's press service, while the presidency referred to quarantine measures for the head of state and members of his government. "Everyone is in good condition," he said.

The officials took part yesterday, Monday, in a five-hour meeting of the National Security Council, which is attended by ministers, deputy ministers and intelligence officials.

Shortly afterwards, Parliament Speaker Nikola Mincev fell ill and was put to the test. He will have to remain in solitary confinement for ten days, according to Chief Health Inspector Angel Kunchev.

For the rest of the attendees, the duration of the isolation will be shorter, as the authorities will today relax the rules in the light of the spread of the Omicron variant.

Bulgaria, the least vaccinated EU member state with less than 30% of its population receiving both doses, has seen an outbreak in recent days.

More than 31.000 people have lost their lives since the pandemic struck the country of 6,5 million people, with the mortality rate being one of the highest in the world.
