At least eighteen people have been killed in heavy rains in the southeastern Brazilian state of S Πάo Paulo that caused landslides from Friday to Sunday, authorities said.

"As of Friday, floods have killed at least 18 people, including seven children, and displaced some 500 families," the Sao Paulo governor's office said in a statement.

Governor Zhou Doria has announced that 15 million reais (2,4 million euros) will be disbursed to help the 10 most affected cities in Brazil's most populous state.

Since the start of the rainy season in October, Brazil has suffered extensive damage, especially in the state of Bahia (northeast), where the official death toll has risen to 24, and in the state of Minas Gerais (southeast), where at least 19 deaths have been reported and thousands displaced.
