Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy is in custody.
According to the French media, Sarkozy is being held by the Nanterre police authorities in connection with the investigation into the illegal financing of his election campaign by the Gaddafi regime in 2007.
The revelations were made in 2012. A Libyan government document dating back to 2006 bears the signature of former Libyan intelligence chief Musa Kousa and speaks of a Tripoli agreement to offer Sarkozy's 50m-euro campaign.
According to Le Monde, the case concerns the possibility that the former French president had received funding for his 2007 election campaign from Libya. This is the first time Sarkozy has been asked to comment on the matter since the case was opened in April 2013. His detention could last up to 48 hours.
