Inflation fell to 9,9% in August from 10,1% the previous month, which was a 40-year high.
According to the Office of National Statistics, the small drop in the consumer price index is due to the slight decrease in fuel costs.
The new increase in food prices, on the contrary, is the main reason why inflation has been kept at such high levels.
