The German prosecutor investigating the disappearance of little British girl Madeleine McCann said that there is currently no prospect of charges being brought against the main suspect in the case, Sky News reported today.
Christian Bruckner was officially named a suspect in 2020 in the case of Madeleine McCann, who disappeared from the hotel room where she was staying with her family in Portugal in 2007. He denies any involvement.
Bruckner, who is convicted of drug trafficking and sexual abuse of a minor, is serving a seven-year sentence in Germany for raping a woman in the Algarve region from where the girl disappeared. His sentence ends in September 2025.
In October, Bruckner was acquitted by a German court of unrelated charges of rape and child sexual abuse, increasing the likelihood that he will be released from prison this year.
“There is currently no prospect of charges being brought in the Maddie case,” German prosecutor Han Christian Wolters said in an interview broadcast by Sky News today. He added that as things stand, Bruckner will be released early in September.
McCann, then three years old, disappeared from her hotel room in the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz where she was vacationing with her parents while they were having dinner with friends nearby.
Her fate has remained unknown since then and no body has been found.
German police announced in June 2020 that McCann was presumed dead and that Bruckner, now in his 40s, was the likely culprit.
The prosecutor said he would seek a new arrest warrant for Brickner to keep him in prison beyond September. One of Brickner's lawyers, cited by Sky News, said his defense team would oppose such a move.
