Driving on wet roads hides many pitfalls, so drivers should always be vigilant and fully focused, the Police said in a statement, on the occasion of the severe weather phenomena that are expected in the coming hours.

For the safety of the driver, the occupants of the vehicle and all road users it would be good to follow the following simple tips:

1. Make sure the wipers are not worn and that there is enough water in the windscreen washer tank.

2. Turn on the headlights and drive carefully for limited visibility.

3. Closed windows during the rain quickly lead to the fogging of the windows, use the air-conditioning system to clean the windows.

4. Check your tires before going out on the road. Make sure the tires have both the required tread depth and the correct pressure. The normal tread depth helps to prevent skidding and water slipping.

5. Rain increases the slipperiness of the road. Especially at the beginning of the rain, the roads can become extremely slippery.

6. Reduce speed, reduced speed driving allows longer tread contact with the road, which leads to better traction. Keep a greater safety distance from the car in front.

7. Preparing for a rainy trip requires careful use of all major checkpoints - steering wheel, clutch, brakes and accelerator - as well as greater safety margin for possible errors and emergencies. When you start a rainy trip, your shoes will be wet and will slip easily off the pedals. Rub the soles on the car mat before starting the engine. Check that the headlights, taillights, brake lights and turn signals are working properly.

8. In the rain overtaking requires a lot of attention, because calculating the speed of other cars is more difficult and the abrupt change of lane can lead to loss of control of the car.

9. Do not try to pass through moving water if you can not have wider monitoring of the environment. Heavy rain is likely to form torrents, which can become extremely dangerous.

10. In places where a lot of water has been "collected", move very slowly and remember that the more water the car lifts with your passage, the greater the chance that the electrical parts of the engine will get wet.

11. When moving in residential areas, pay attention to pedestrians who walk on the sidewalk or wait at a bus stop, to avoid unwanted situations (wetting them).

11 + 1. Before each traffic you are informed about the situation that prevails in the road network, through the websites and the Social Media of the Police, as well as the category Road Network, in the Application of the Cyprus Police
