The right of a woman to terminate her pregnancy up to the first 12 weeks has been enshrined in law since March 2018 and the state has an obligation to support the free choice of every woman, extending her medical coverage by GESY, claims the candidate for the Presidency of the Republic Achilles Demitriadis.
In a written statement issued on Tuesday, Mr. Dimitriadis also states that every woman is entitled to receive psychological support through the GESS for her free choice, before and after the termination of pregnancy, as well as any other relevant medical coverage.
Referring to data that saw the light of day, Mr. Dimitriadis states that every year in Cyprus it is estimated that more than 8 thousand women choose to terminate their pregnancies.
The state, however, notes, recently decided to adopt the piecemeal practice for medical coverage by the GESS only when the woman documents the exceptions to the law, such as psychological and physical harm.
Referring to the turn of the issue in the USA, Achilleas Dimitriadis characterizes it as backward.
