The Supreme Court today accepted the appeal of the Attorney General of the Republic against a decision of the District Court of Nicosia dated June 8, 2021, which ordered the release of the accused on parole until the date his case was referred to the Lefkos Criminal Court. The accused faces a large number of charges for sexual offenses allegedly committed against two minor boys and against an adult male.

A request was submitted at first instance by the Legal Service, as the Prosecution Authority, as the accused remains in custody until his trial, since due to the seriousness of the offenses he faces and the possibility of conviction, there was a risk of absconding, but also due to the possibility of part of the other offenses. Also, because based on the available testimony, the defendant attempted to influence a key witness in the case, the request for detention was based on the possibility that he would be released to influence witnesses. The request of the Prosecution Authority was rejected by the Court of First Instance.

The above decision was appealed by the Attorney General and after a hearing in which the Assistant Attorney General Savvas Angelidis appeared together with lawyers of the Legal Service, the Court of Appeal overturned the first instance decision today, considering that the request of the circumstances, justified. To this end, he ordered the detention of the accused until the date on which the case is assigned before the permanent Criminal Court of Nicosia.
