The 1st case of foot-and-mouth disease was identified in a pig farm, in the Paliometochos area.
Speaking on the Morning Route, the president of the Cyprus Pig Farmers Association, Petros Kailas, stated that there are 3 pig farms in this area. He explained that these are 3 separate units, which – however – are located in a single space and belong to the same family.
At the same time, he pointed out that the total number of pigs in the three units is approximately 20.000.
Mr. Kailas also noted that the owner of the pig farm in question had been informed by telephone that a case of foot-and-mouth disease had been detected in his unit, adding that until last night, he had not received official information.
As Petros Kailas mentioned, these farms are located in an area that extends from the west side of Nicosia airport to Kokkinotrimithia and Paliometocho.
Following the new case, the Veterinary Services created a new 3-kilometer protection zone and 10-kilometer surveillance zone.
