The identification of a case of foot-and-mouth disease in the Limassol district, specifically on a farm with 66 sheep and goats, in the Pachna community, is a particularly worrying development, stated the Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture.
Speaking on the Morning Route, Andreas Grigoriou said that the virus did not spread to the specific area on its own.
He indicated that the virus is transmitted by humans, animals and mechanical means and once again called on livestock farmers to implement strict biosecurity measures in their units in order to protect their animals.
He also stressed that today the competent services will immediately proceed with the killing of the animals, in an effort to limit the outbreak of infection in the area.
Referring to the management of units with traditional breed animals, he said that a relevant decision is expected to be issued by the Director of Veterinary Services, who is responsible for this specific issue.
Mr. Grigoriou recalled that so far, there have been only two cases of traditional breed animals falling ill with foot-and-mouth disease.
It is emphasized that these animals have not been killed.
