The possibility of cuts in water supply during the summer months remains open, due to reduced water reserves and increased demand.
As stated in the Morning Itinerary by the Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Andreas Grigoriou, based on the decisions of the Water Management Advisory Committee and the Council of Ministers, for 2026 approximately the same amount of water will be made available for water supply purposes as in 2024, which, however, falls short of actual needs by approximately 10%.
He also mentioned that a working group has been formed with the participation of the Department of Water Development and the Provincial Government Organizations, with the aim of the best possible management of reserves and avoiding extensive outages.
The Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Andreas Grigoriou, defended the implementation of an environmental fee on water, emphasizing that it began gradually from 2020, with priority given to large consumers, while emphasizing that there are possibilities to control charges and settle debts in installments.
Speaking also on the Morning Schedule, Mr. Grigoriou acknowledged that there may have been errors or omissions in the application of the regulation on drilling and stated that the issue would be investigated in cooperation with the competent department. He stressed, however, that the holders of water abstraction permits were aware of their obligation. At the same time, he rejected comparisons with other water uses, clarifying that, for example, golf courses that use recycled water pay a much higher fee.
