At this time, it was emphasized, unaccompanied children are in a safe zone in Pournara, but it was judged that it would be better not to stay there for a long time.
At the same time, it was emphasized by the Deputy Ministry that it is among his priorities to find a place for unaccompanied minor children to be protected, noting that before a decision is made there will be a consultation with the local authorities. "A structure will not spring up one morning on a site without first consulting," we were told.
There are currently 56 unaccompanied minors in Pournara, while dozens of other children are in structures of non-governmental organizations. The problem is how they are coming in increased numbers for this and a state structure should be created.
In the meantime, where it is rumored that space will be created for the accommodation of minor children, there are also reactions. Initially, during the previous government, it was decided to build a structure in Zygi, with the community leader strongly reacting. Later there was information about the KEN Pafos where again there were reactions, while now it is rumored to be housed in areas of Lakatamia, Latsia or Geri. A specific area of the former Highgate school has already been mentioned for Lakatamia. with the DISY municipal group opposing it "of the creation of a new Pournara in the area".
The mayor of Lakatamia, Fotoula Hatzipapa, yesterday assured the citizens of the transparent management of the issue that arose with the possible use of the abandoned building of the former "Highgate" school by the state to create a structure for the accommodation of minors.
In her written statement, the Mayor notes that she has already contacted the relevant Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, the Director General of the Deputy Ministry and the Director General of the Ministry of the Interior, expressing her strong concern. He also indicated, both orally and in written letters, that a public consultation must be held first and opinions must be submitted by the Municipality of Lakatamia and the organized bodies.
