The Speaker of the House of Representatives Annita Dimitriou received on Friday a delegation of the Municipality of Famagusta, headed by the Mayor of Famagusta Simos Ioannou and representatives of twinned Families with the Famagusta Municipalities of Greece, who pay a visit to August 7, 2021.

According to an announcement from the Parliament, from the Greek side, the Mayor of Central Corfu Meropi Hydraiou, the Deputy Mayor of Chania Michalis Tsoupakis and the Deputy Mayor of Messolonghi Christos Masautis and other representatives of the three Municipalities were present.

Welcoming the delegation, the Speaker of Parliament noted that the participation of Greek officials in the anti-occupation event of the Municipality of Famagusta involves special symbolism and reaffirms the full solidarity and practical support of Greece in our efforts for our justification and support. We are going through an extremely difficult period, Ms. Dimitriou stressed, as Turkey commits new blatant violations of international law and the UN Security Council Resolutions.

Congratulating the Municipality of Famagusta for its initiatives and actions, Ms. Dimitriou informed the delegation about specific actions of the House of Representatives at the international level, to address the growing Turkish challenges to the detriment of Cyprus and especially in the surrounding area.

The Speaker of the Parliament stressed the need for unity, solidarity and coordination, in order to fully understand in the international community that Turkey's threats and illegal actions are not only a matter for Cyprus, but increase the tension and hinder the efforts to achieve peace, stability and security in the wider Eastern Mediterranean region.

The Mayor of Central Corfu conveyed a message of solidarity and support of the Central Union of Greek Municipalities to Cyprus. Ms. Hydraiou underlined the fraternal ties between Cyprus and Greece, emphasizing that all of Greece is always a helper and companion in the struggle of the Cypriot people for justice.
