The Council of Europe calls for a reversal of Turkish actions in Varos and hopes for a resumption of talks on the Cyprus issue, while expressing readiness to support United Nations efforts to that end.

In a statement issued Wednesday, Council of Europe Secretary General Maria Petsinovic Buric expressed concern over the announcements made by the Turkish President and the Turkish Cypriot leader on July 20th.

"Such unilateral action is unfortunate, as it contradicts the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, which are fully recognized by the Council of Europe. We demand the reversal of this decision. "The dialogue between the two communities must continue," said Ms Buric.

At the same time, the CoE Secretary General hopes that the Presidential Declaration of the United Nations Security Council on Varos will contribute to the resumption of talks. "The Council of Europe stands ready to support efforts under this auspices of the United Nations. "The human rights of all Cypriots must be fully respected on the basis of the relevant UN resolutions and in accordance with the guarantees provided by the European Convention on Human Rights."
