A sharp drop in temperature, isolated rains and snowfalls in the higher mountains are expected to be brought by the cold air mass "Coral" starting Thursday, Panagiotis Georgiou, Meteorological Officer of the Department of Meteorology, told CNA on Tuesday, noting that the phenomena are expected to peak over the weekend.
Asked how the cold air mass named “Coral” is expected to affect Cyprus, Mr. Georgiou said that from Thursday (Tsiknopempti) it appears that there will be a drop of up to 5 degrees compared to the temperature of recent days, explaining that “from 18-19 degrees Celsius, we will be around 13 degrees Celsius on Thursday, the maximum of the day.”
He noted that further drops are expected on Friday and Saturday, possibly 2 degrees on Friday and another 3 degrees on Saturday. As he noted, the maximum temperature for Saturday "is expected to be around 7 degrees Celsius, down from the 18 we had in recent days."
When asked what the cold air mass "Coral" is expected to bring, Mr. Georgiou said that few, isolated rains and snow are expected in the higher mountains for Thursday and Friday.
On Saturday, he said, several phenomena are expected with local rains and storms and snow in the mountainous and semi-mountainous areas, adding that the phenomenon is expected to affect the highest mountains, north and south of Troodos, while the rains appear to affect several areas throughout the island.
Regarding the expected duration of the phenomenon, Mr. Georgiou replied that low temperatures appear to remain at Saturday's levels on Sunday, while a gradual rise is expected from Monday onwards. "We will return again, from what it seems, within the next week, to around 16 degrees Celsius, which is the average temperature for the season," he said.
