Citizens have been contacting the Police Headquarters since yesterday and coming forward to give statements in connection with the case of a criminal organization operating in Cyprus, Police Spokesperson Kyriaki Lambrianidou told CNA, noting that the investigative work is ongoing.
Speaking to CNA, Ms. Lambrianidou said that specific citizens have already contacted the TAE Headquarters, while some of them have already come forward to give statements, in relation to the actions and manner in which the organization in question acted.
Citizens with bad loans
According to Kyriaki Lambrianidou, these are vulnerable citizens who have problems with banks, such as bad loans, and appear to have been defrauded by the alleged organization.
As he noted, the Police are studying the material before them, so that they can establish the offenses in the case.
It is noted that the court yesterday issued an 8-day detention order for a 62-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman, while an arrest warrant is still pending against a 45-year-old man.
Number of members unknown
Ms. Lambrianidou reported that ten offenses are being investigated against them, including participation in a criminal organization, publication of false news that may undermine public order and public trust, impersonation by a public official, threats, abuse of power, circulation of a forged document and conspiracy to commit a felony.
In relation to the number of individuals who allegedly make up the organization, Ms. Lambrianidou did not confirm the number that was made public, saying that "the number of members is still unknown and may emerge from the investigations that are being conducted."
Asked if more arrests are expected, she said that a warrant is in progress, while adding that it will be seen in the course of the interrogations and from the testimonies of the complaining citizens whether more arrests will be made.
He stated that the Police still have a long way to go in relation to the case, since new evidence is constantly emerging from the complaints they have received so far.
