A 25-year-old man from Nicosia was arrested in Larnaca for illegal possession and transportation of offensive instruments and explosive materials.

As reported by Spyros Chrysostomos, press representative of the Larnaca Police Department, "around 01.30 this morning, information was received that on Papanikoli Street in Larnaca, despite the "Antonis Papadopoulos" stadium, young people were disturbing and setting fire to baskets. Members of TAE Larnaca and MMAD went to the place where they found around 20 people hiding in the parking lot of the stadium, who acted threateningly towards them by throwing stones and molotov cocktails."

He added that "the members of the Police used chemical means as a result of which the 20 people fled to the settlement of Agioi Anargyro. From police investigations in the parking lot of the stadium, a plastic soft drink bottle containing a flammable substance with a firecracker taped to it was found and taken as evidence.

As Mr. Chrysostomou said, "around 02.50 a vehicle driven by a 25-year-old man from Nicosia was stopped on Cykliki Avenue, and a search of his car revealed a plastic water bottle with a firecracker taped to it, four bats, a hood, a pair of gloves, a spray of blue paint, a masking tape and a large number of stickers of a specific football team. The findings were received as evidence while the 25-year-old was arrested for the apparent offenses of illegal possession of explosives and illegal possession of offensive instruments and was taken into custody."

Later today, the 25-year-old is expected to appear before the Larnaca District Court for the issuance of an arrest warrant.

The case is being investigated by the Larnaca Police Department.
