Two people in Limassol reported that they had been scammed after losing nearly three million dollars worth of cryptocurrencies. A 32-year-old suspect was arrested in connection with the case and placed under seven-day detention.
According to the Limassol Investment and Development Authority, as reported by the two complainants, for the last six years they maintained two "cold" electronic wallets (disconnected from the internet), in which there were investments in various cryptocurrencies.
They recently realized that they had fallen victim to fraud, after their electronic wallets were compromised and unauthorized withdrawals were made for a total amount of 2.891,293 US dollars.
The examinations that followed yielded testimony against a 32-year-old man, who was arrested and brought before the Limassol District Court this morning.
A seven-day detention order was obtained against him for offenses related to internet fraud, extortion of money by false pretenses and offenses under the Prevention and Combating of Money Laundering Law.
The case is being investigated by the Limassol Financial Crimes Office.
