His position for a two-state solution, as well as his view that "the realities and conditions in Cyprus have changed," he said at the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy, Ersin Tatar, after meeting with Lut in who said that "there should definitely be a five-party +1, meeting".
The Tatar-Lut meeting started at 11.30 and ended at 14.00 with the Turkish leader stating that he explained to Jane Hall Lut that, with the support and power given to him by the "people", a new era has begun in Cyprus. Talks on a federal solution that have been going on for 52 years have yielded no results and, according to Ersin Tatar, the UN Secretary-General himself, who had personal experience in the Crans Montana process, is aware of this.
That is why, he added, "it will be important to have a negotiation process for two states that, based on sovereign equality, will live side by side and work together." In a five-party +1 meeting, as proposed by the Turkish Foreign Minister, which will be attended by Turkey, Greece, the Turkish Cypriot side and the Greek Cypriot side, as well as the UN, he will be given the opportunity to develop his position. and the whole process to gain a new basis. All this, he said, he explained in detail to Mrs. Lut.
According to Mr. Tatar, the Turkish "people" have the right to live in this "country" in peace, prosperity and security, because it is, based on the 1960 agreements, one of the two parts of these agreements. "The T / C people are one of the two peoples living here and have sovereign rights stemming from these agreements."
He explained to her, he added, that the other side will not dominate and that the Turkish Cypriots have the right to self-determination and such a climate should be created so that they can use this right. From 1974, he continued, the Turkish side showed goodwill and flexibility in all negotiation processes, as well as during the Annan plan and in Crans Montana, "without finding a response from the other side. That is why a process on the same basis is not going to bring results from now on. A new page must begin, a new process. "The Turkish people deserve this because they are the real hostage."
The Turkish Cypriots, he continued, can not play in (international) games, while there is an embargo and isolation - as he claimed - both economically, politically and in culture. He added that the development of the pseudo-state and direct flights are being hindered and there must be more creativity - in his words - in opening up the community and the Turkish Cypriots to the outside world. "Yes, we have expectations, maybe the other side also has." The Turkish Cypriots, he said, expect the UN and the international community to consider all this.
What is happening in the eastern Mediterranean, said the Turkish leader, shows that Cyprus is no longer the old Cyprus, there is geostrategic importance due to hydrocarbons and if a viable, fair and permanent solution is found in Cyprus, then there will be a series of procedures that will address all these developments.
Jane Hall Luth, she added, listened to him, took notes, asked questions to which she was answered in detail. He does not know, he said, if Ms. Lut will have another meeting with him after the one with President Anastasiadis, "if he feels the need he will come". Her task, he continued, is to investigate whether there is ground for a five-member and for this purpose she will go to Greece tomorrow and then to Turkey. She said she would brief the UN Secretary-General on her contacts and decide whether or not to hold a five-day meeting. "I told her that there should definitely be a five-party +1 conference, in which we will explain all this, as we explained it to her. "Because the realities in Cyprus and the circumstances have changed a lot."
There is no need to continue the same process, he added, and the developments in the eastern Mediterranean, the discovery of hydrocarbons, the position of Turkey, the expectations of the Turkish Cypriots "have brought us to a different point". He believes, he continued, that there can be a win-win situation because if there is a solution, both the Turkish Cypriots and the Greek Cypriots and the whole region will benefit from it.
Asked if he had given the message that he was not going to a five-party summit to discuss the federation, Ersin Tatar replied: "There are new realities in Cyprus." And he reiterated his position for two states that will be side by side on the basis of sovereign equality.
Asked if the issue of the fenced city of Famagusta was discussed, Tatar said no, saying it was not Lut's job. Its task, she said, is to seek the ground for a five-party plus one conference.
Answering another question, the Turkish leader said that they do not warmly see the resumption of talks from the same point, nor can such a thing be accepted. He added that Ms. Lut, who has been following the Cyprus issue since the 90s, knows the region and Cyprus very well, "and now knows very well that some things have changed. It is not Cyprus that it was 20 years ago. The eastern Mediterranean is not the same either. Expectations have also changed "
He reiterated his position that the Turkish Cypriots are constantly being held hostage to this situation and that it is not really acceptable for UN Resolution 186 of 1964 to still apply in Cyprus, which recognizes in Cyprus only the Republic of Cyprus as a state. This is the biggest injustice done to the Turkish Cypriots, he claimed. "And they may not say it openly, but they know it themselves."
He also claimed that the acceptance of the Greek Cypriots - as he said - unilaterally in the EU, despite the fact that they rejected the Annan plan, made things difficult "and everyone knows that. "Our effort is to explain all this, to defend our fair fight and to go one level further."
"They know this too well because we are right. We are the hostages. The Greek Cypriots are defending the status quo because the people recognize them, all the financial and other support goes to them. Next to us is the Turkish Republic. There is no force other than Turkey to make such openings to us because that is how the regime was created. We say that in this regime we are the hostages ".
He insisted to Ms. Lut, Ersin Tatar said, that the Turkish youth could not participate in international matches, nor could a football team go to Turkey. This is prevented by the Greek Cypriot side, "they use the veto. "These are not acceptable things in this day and age." That's something that needs to change, he added.
Asked if Ms Lut would go to Turkey, Mr Tatar said there was a problem with the flights due to the pandemic, noting that he had requested an appointment from Ankara and would leave later.
In the meeting with the Turkish Cypriot leader were the former negotiators of the Turkish Cypriot side, Ergun Olgun and Osman Ertug, the Famagusta "MP" of KEE, Oguzhan Hasipoglou who is in charge of the Cyprus issue and knows the issue of Varosi and Varos Berna Dogrouyol.
