Paphos Police are investigating two cases of attempted burglary of a building, attempted burglary of a church, burglary of a hotel room and possession of burglary tools.

According to the Assistant Police Director of Paphos, Michalis Ioannou, on 27.12.21 at 21:00 in the evening, a 25-year-old owner of a gym located in Paphos reported to the TAE Paphos that between December 24-27, 2021, an attempt was made to break into her Gym. On the same day, he allegedly found out after an inspection by the closed circuit footage he maintains, that on 24.12.21 around 02:00 an unknown man using a tool tried to break the lock of the gym door. From the study of the closed circuit and the plans seen by the members of the Burglary Ladder of TAE Paphos, a 34-year-old person, a permanent resident of Paphos, was identified.

An arrest warrant was issued against him and he was searched at his residence and elsewhere, without being located at this stage. Mr. Ioannou said that efforts to locate him continue.

Also, according to Paphos Assistant Police Director Michalis Ioannou, yesterday at 07:45 he was reported to the Paphos Police Department by a security guard at a Paphos hotel, that on the same day and time while he was at work he saw from the security cameras a white car and with specific registration numbers to park in the parking lot next to the church of Agios Georgios in Chloraka.

Then two people got off, the co-driver and the driver of the vehicle, went outside the Church and allegedly tried to break into it but without success. The two men then left the scene and one of them went back, walking to a neighboring hotel. He then disappeared from the closed circuit footage.

The specific vehicle mentioned above was placed under discreet surveillance and on the same day at 19:50 its driver arrived. After the members of TAE Paphos approached him and he was investigated, they found him in possession in a bag that had a knife and other objects on his shoulder. He was subsequently arrested for the self-inflicted crime of stabbing and illegal possession of property. In a further search, he found in a bag he had, on his neck under his jacket, a multi-tool pliers with a handle in a case and a knife with a six-centimeter blade, as well as a bank debit card in another name. .

He was later arrested for possession of burglary devices and, with his own consent, made a scene, pointed to a hotel room where he had previously broken into it and stole what was eventually found in his possession.

After additional examinations, it became clear that this is a person who lives permanently in Cyprus, 46 years old, who is the driver and owner of the above vehicle. Then, after a study of the closed circuit, it was found that the second person who was riding in the vehicle as a co-driver is a 20-year-old who has been employed by the Burglary and Theft Ladder of TAE Paphos. The 46-year-old was interrogated in writing, reported what happened and then a new arrest warrant was issued for the 20-year-old. The two persons, after being interrogated, admitted that they had committed the crimes they were facing.

Investigations into the case are ongoing.
