A conference to be held on March 18 will examine the prospects for developing a tram system as a means of public urban transport that could make a catalytic contribution to Limassol's traffic problem, Mayor Yiannis Armeftis told CNA.
On the sidelines of today's visit by French Ambassador Clelia Chevrier Kolacko, Yiannis Armeftis said that Limassol is examining the example of the city of Marseille, with which it is twinned.
"It is worth investigating this at this time, which is why we want to bring the example of Marseille and two other French cities," he said, adding that at the conference, which the French Ambassador herself is expected to attend, "we will bring experts related to the technical and financial aspects of such a project."
The important thing about these large projects, he added, "is their sustainability and one must take into account the added value they can give to a city, since they are also an occasion for more general regeneration, because they are very much combined with quality public space."
Mr. Armeutis emphasized that the traffic problem in Limassol is enormous and since 90% of citizens continue to use their private vehicles, the problem will remain, with all that this entails in terms of time and money.
The Conference will take place on March 18, at the "Panos Solomonidis" Municipal Cultural Center.
